My adventure to Ratti Gali Lake was organized by a trekking company, which picked me up from I-8 Islamabad at 3 AM in a Toyota Coaster. The lake is about 250 km from Islamabad, so we traveled overnight and arrived in the town of Dowarian around 1 PM.
From Dowarian, we boarded jeeps that would take us to the base camp. The drive began through a lush forest alongside a picturesque stream, which flows down from the lake. As we progressed deeper into the mountains, the altitude rose past the treeline, and the terrain morphed into a mix of rocks and grass. The narrow jeep track, peppered with hairpin turns, definitely added a thrill to the journey.
The track was single-lane, serving both directions of traffic, which turned the ride into an exhilarating experience as we navigated around oncoming jeeps. It was especially nerve-wracking when our jeep was on the edge, just inches from a steep drop into the icy glacial waters below. In total, it took us about 2.5 to 3 hours to reach the lake’s base camp, just as dusk began to fall.
If you set out early from Dowarian, it’s possible to complete the round trip to Ratti Gali in a day. Alternatively, you can spend the night at the base camp, where locals have set up a campsite on a plateau just below the lake. They provide all the camping essentials—tents, mattresses, and blankets—so you don’t need to worry about bringing your own gear.
From Left to Right: Ratti Gali Lake, Mini Ratti Gali Lake, and Ratti Gali Base Camp
Food is available on-site, though prices are slightly higher than usual, reflecting the remote location. In the evening, we gathered around a bonfire, which, in hindsight, should have been avoided due to its impact on deforestation. Firewood isn’t easy to come by, as it’s transported from lower altitudes where trees still grow. At night, temperatures dipped to about 5°C even in August, but thankfully, we were well prepared with warm clothing and quality sleeping bags.
You can reach Ratti Gali Lake either by hiking or by riding a mule. Personally, I strongly recommend hiking. There’s a unique sense of achievement that comes from putting in the effort to reach your goal, which makes the experience that much more fulfilling. As we set off from the base camp, we kept the stream on our left while maneuvering through a steep, grassy incline, dodging a few swampy patches along the way.
After about 30 minutes of hiking, we encountered ‘Mini’ Ratti Gali, the smaller lake located just below the main one. As we approached the summit, the nearly vertical mountain behind Ratti Gali became increasingly visible. Eventually, the trail leveled out, and we were treated to breathtaking views of Ratti Gali in all its glory.
