Places to Visit in Turkey

Turkey, with its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning landscapes, is a captivating destination for travelers. In this blog post, I will take you on a virtual journey to two remarkable cities in Turkey: Istanbul and Bursa. Join me as we explore the highlights, share useful tips, and experience the unique charm of these captivating destinations.

My adventure begins with a flight from Sharjah to Istanbul Sabiha Airport. Upon arrival, I recommend exchanging only a small amount of cash (around $20-$30) at the airport, as the exchange rates are generally more favorable outside the airport premises. From the airport, you have several options for reaching the city center. The most cost-effective option is the airport transport bus, which charges approximately 50 lira. This bus will drop you off at Taksim Square, a central location from where you can easily access the metro, taxis, ferries, or trams to reach your hotel.

For my stay in Istanbul, I booked a hostel called Antique, conveniently located near the Blue Mosque. Most of the city’s attractions are within walking distance of this area, making it an ideal base for exploration. However, it’s important to remain vigilant regarding pickpocketing incidents, particularly in crowded areas. Taking necessary precautions will ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

After spending two eventful days in Istanbul, I decided to embark on a day trip to Bursa. To make the most of your visit, it’s advisable to research and compare prices offered by different local tourism companies. Negotiating with them can often lead to lower rates, and I managed to secure a deal for €30. If you’re traveling with a group of four or more, renting a car might be a convenient option, especially considering the detours involved in using public transportation.

In Bursa, you’ll find a distinct ambiance, different from that of Istanbul. Known for its historical sites, natural beauty, and thermal baths, Bursa offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city life. The Grand Mosque, the Green Mosque, and the famous Bursa Citadel are among the notable attractions that showcase the city’s rich heritage.

Turkey is renowned for its delectable cuisine, and Istanbul offers an array of options to indulge in local Turkish delicacies. From traditional kebabs to mouthwatering baklava, the culinary scene in Istanbul is a true delight. While dining at high-end restaurants can be expensive (ranging from 500 to 700 lira), there are plenty of affordable options available to suit different budgets. Exploring local eateries and street food stalls allows you to savor the authentic flavors of Turkey without breaking the bank.

Although Turkey is home to many enchanting cities, it is practically impossible to explore all of them within a short timeframe. In my visit, I focused on Istanbul and Bursa, two remarkable destinations that offer a glimpse into Turkey’s diverse offerings. Istanbul, despite its slight increase in prices post-Covid, continues to mesmerize travelers with its rich history and vibrant atmosphere. Meanwhile, Bursa provides a tranquil retreat, showcasing the country’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Whether you have a few days or a longer vacation, Turkey promises an unforgettable experience filled with captivating sights, flavorsome cuisine, and warm hospitality.

Thrilling Things to Do in Turkey

Scuba Diving:

I’ll admit, I was scared at first, but I took the plunge – literally! 🌊 Overcame my fear, explored the underwater wonders, and it was mind-blowing! 💦 Never underestimate the power of conquering your fears.

Paragliding:

What a thrill! 🪂 Soared above the stunning landscapes of Fethiye with an amazing female pilot who made it a breeze. She was an absolute gem! 💎 The excitement was off the charts, and I owe it all to her. 🌄
If you’re ever in Fethiye and seeking adventure, Fly Infinity is the company to go with. They made it all possible! 🌟

Price with pictures and videos:

Paragliding: €120 with male pilot and €150 with female pilot (price after bargaining)
Scuba: €45 per person.

Also keep in mind that Scuba takes very long since they took us on a boat and everyone had their turn of 5 minutes. Whole Scuba experience for per person is for 5 minutes and the boat dropped us to beach after around 3.5 hours. For females, it’s better to wear your own modest swim suit for Scuba so you can enjoy other time in water too.

Do’s && Dont’s in Turkey !!!

1. Topkapi Palace and Hagia Sophia Mosque are must-sees. The ottomans certainly knew how to decorate, didn’t they? 🛕

2. Princess Island: Everything you’ve seen in movies about a princess land is true, and this place will prove it to you 🏝

3. Try local street food which is cheap and tasty. Going to fancy restaurant once or twice is fine but sachi main unka khana smjh nhi ayega apko 😂

4. Cappadocia is absolutely stunning, especially when the sky is filled with hot air balloons in the morning. WOW is all I can say.

5. One should really take an ATV ride while in Cappadocia. You will absolutely enjoy the experience. Its worth all the money and time.

6. DO NOT GO FOR TURKISH NIGHT, I REPEAT, DO NOT GO FOR TURKISH NIGHT. its fazool ki hype and not at all worth it.

7. Antalya is a city that might throw you for a loop. In one day, we had three different types of weather. First Sunny, that we were literally sweating, cold breeze and then heavy rain fall. So be prepared and keep your umbrella with you while visiting antalya. Werna tip tip barsa pani kerna prega wahan 💃🏼

8. Lastly bursa tour, for me it was only worthwhile because i got to see snow ; else, it wasn’t worthwhile for me. Tiring and nothing exciting. Din zaya with not so much to do. However, people do visit so apki marzi hai bhae.

Turkey Travel Tips.

1️⃣– Stay in SultanAhmet (not Taksim)
This is where all the old world charn and heritage is. We stayed at @surahotels and loved the location and service. Seriously just a two minutes walk to the Blue Mosque.
.
2️⃣– The blue mosque is underwhelming. It’s under renovation and it looks better from the outside. Skip going inside and head to the TopKapi Palace instead- which is absolutely a must do. .
.
3️⃣– Take an audio guide if you go inside the Hagia Sophia- it is an ancient church turned mosque turned museum. If you scroll through the pics I’m standing inside it, and it felt awesome to be in the secret marble room.
.
.
4️⃣– History is not boring. And Turkey isn’t all about history either. It’s got immense natural beauty and exciting things to do (hot air balloons in Cappadocia, white water rafting in Antalya, cable car in Bursa). It’s very happening. And close to Dubai too. Tickets are cheap via @airarabiagroup.
.
5️⃣– Turkey’s population is 99% Muslim, the food is halal, there is food available at every corner and it’s fresh, hygenic and tasty! @cznburak’s restaurant at Taksim is top notch if you want to splurge. Also you won’t miss the Muslim shower anywhere in Turkey haha 😂
.
6️⃣– Turkish bagels called Simit are best eaten warm with Nutella or a cup of Turkish chai. Cold and on their own they will taste like dry bread and you’ll wonder what the fuss was about? .
.
7️⃣– If you want great pics at the blue mosque go early before it opens to visitors. 7am ish.
.
8️⃣– SultanAhmet is so busy with tourists but quiet and peaceful at the same time. There were cafes just outside our hotel and this one called ‘the Gallery’ had amazing views of the Blue Mosque. I could have sat there all day! Istanbul isn’t a city break. It’s quite peaceful if you don’t rush with back to back tours. Give yourself two days to JUST BE, keep it unscheduled.
.
9️⃣ Turkish delights are amazing and one on every corner- better buy them from Taksim as they sell for a fair price there compared to SultanAhmet. I regret not buying more. Esp pomogranate with honey and pistachio 😋😋 .
.
🔟– You’ll fall in love with Istanbul- go soon 😘
