Usho (also spelled Ushu; derived from Kalami oš, meaning ‘cold, ice’) is a village located in the Usho Valley within the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. It lies 8 kilometers (5.0 mi) from Kalam and 123 kilometers (76 mi) from Mingora, situated in the Swat Kohistan region at an elevation of 2,300 meters (7,550 feet). Usho is renowned for its stunning forest, characterized by clouds and rain. The notable tourist destination, Mahodand Lake, can be found 27 kilometers (17 mi) away from the village. In the winter months, the famous Ushu glacier obstructs the sole route to Mahodand Lake, which only becomes accessible again in the summer when the glacier’s snow melts and the road is cleared by the authorities.
