In 1983, a resort was built on the banks of Lower Kachura Lake, also known as Shangrila Lake. It is about 20 minutes from Skardu town. Lost Horizon was a book written by James Hilton that was the inspiration for the name Shangrila. In Chinese, the word Shangri-la means ‘Heaven on earth’.

The entry price for locals is Rs.500, while the price for foreigners is Rs.1000.

After the plane crash, the survivors were taken to a place called Shangrila by monks living nearby.
